Clio Buys Learned Hand as Judiciary Strategy Expands

Clio has bought Learned Hand, an AI company focused on supporting judges and the courts. The move is part of its wider strategy to build within the judiciary segment of the market, which has included major hires, including the former CEO of the AAA.

So, what is the company they’ve bought?

Learned Hand has built ‘an AI workspace specifically for judges and clerks’ that connects with court case management systems and helps them:

• understand matters before them,
• work through filings and disputed issues,
• conduct legal research,
• prepare bench memoranda
• draft orders tailored to the procedural requirements of each matter.

In short, if you’re a judge then it’s really a go-to tool for you.

Learned Hand’s technology is already being used by courts across the US, including the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, the nation’s largest trial court, Clio noted.

Jack Newton, Clio CEO, commented: ‘AI is changing the pace and volume of legal work across the entire system, but that progress only matters if the courts can keep up.’

‘If lawyers and litigants can move dramatically faster while judges and court teams remain constrained by the same capacity, the bottleneck simply shifts to the courts. We have spent nearly two decades building the technology, legal data, and infrastructure that connect the legal system.

And as noted, this is part of a strategic growth initiative that has also seen Clio hire Pablo Arredondo, co-founder of Casetext as Senior Vice President, Judiciary; and also former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack – who is also the former AAA CEO – and is joining as General Manager, Judiciary.
