Harvey has deepened its engagement with Microsoft, in this case via providing its legal AI platform to the tech giant’s Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs (CELA) group; with the legal AI pioneer in turn ‘expanding its use of Microsoft 365 and Microsoft 365 Copilot internally’.
At present Copilot uses multiple models, having moved beyond its initial reliance on OpenAI’s ChatGPT LLMs and now also uses Anthropic’s offerings. And it’s worth noting that Microsoft is also developing its own ‘Legal Agent’, staffed by former Robin AI team members. I.e. the CELA team possibly could have used a lot of their ‘own brand’ tools, but have chosen to use Harvey.
The legal tech company said that ‘as part of this collaboration, CELA will use the Harvey AI platform to support its work and enhance how teams operate. This reflects Microsoft’s continued investment in applying AI to improve efficiency, streamline workflows, and enable high-quality outcomes at scale’.
AL asked Winston Weinberg, CEO of Harvey, about a couple of aspects, including what the deepening relationship meant to him and the company; and also how this has come about:
‘It means a lot. Microsoft’s Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs (CELA) organization using Harvey is an important step in our long-standing relationship with Microsoft. More broadly, it signals that the world’s leading legal teams are making AI a core part of how they operate.’
‘We’ve built a strong relationship with Microsoft over many years, and this announcement reflects the next chapter in that collaboration. Like any enterprise deployment, CELA also went through a thorough evaluation process before deciding to use Harvey.’
Weinberg also added: ‘Microsoft’s products are foundational to the work lawyers do, so we have always been grateful for our deep relationship with their team.
‘Today’s announcement that Microsoft’s legal team will use Harvey’s platform and that Harvey associates will use more Microsoft products to support our global growth represents the next step in our ongoing relationship with their team, and we look forward to building on it.’
And Antony Cook, Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Microsoft, said: ‘We’re pleased to expand our work with Harvey as part of our broader efforts to bring the benefits of AI into our operations. This collaboration will help our teams work more efficiently and focus on the complex, high-impact work that matters most.’
