Flank, the agentic legal tech company focused on inhouse teams, has launched Flank Record, an autonomous agentic contract system of record, which greatly reduces the need for manual input.
As Berlin-based Flank told AL, ‘agents connect to the customer’s existing systems, consolidate contracts wherever they live, and capture accurate metadata from each executed document at the point of signature, so the record is accurate by construction, not by discipline. The agents then maintain the record continuously, and a qualified lawyer checks their work through Flank’s supervision layer’.
‘Flank Record closes [the] gap by putting agents underneath the data layer rather than on top of it,’ they added.
This site then asked co-founder, Jake Jones, some more about this approach. He explained: ’Think of it as two different jobs an AI can have in relation to your contracts.’
‘The ‘data layer’ is just the pile of facts: the contracts themselves plus everything recorded about them, like renewal dates, counterparties, and values. Every tool you use sits on top of that pile and reads from it.
‘Agents on top is what almost everyone else builds. You point a chatbot or copilot at your existing contract store and it answers questions from whatever it finds. In this case the AI is a reader. It doesn’t touch the underlying data, so if the pile is wrong, and it so often is, the AI confidently answers from garbage. Ask “what expires this quarter?” and it reads a renewal date that was logged at drafting and changed twice in negotiation. You get a fast, fluent, wrong answer, in spite of how smart the asking layer is.
‘Agents underneath means the AI’s job is to make and keep the data true, not to interpret it. Flank’s agents do the librarian work: they watch wherever signed contracts actually land (e-signature, email, shared drives, the old CLM), grab each executed document, extract the real metadata from the final signed version rather than the draft, file it, tag it, spot amendments and update the record, and reconcile duplicates, continuously, every day. Optionally, a lawyer on the Flank side checks their work. In this case the agents are the maintenance workforce for the record itself.’

Alistair Maiden, who recently joined as ‘growth leader’ at Flank, added: ‘I spent a decade implementing contract management systems, and the uncomfortable pattern is that the interface sits unused while the data drifts from the day it’s set up. Buyers were promised a reliable record, and a model that depends on sustained human upkeep structurally can’t deliver one. This is the first system of record I’ve seen where accuracy doesn’t depend on anyone remembering to do anything.’
Flank Record launches today with a waitlist, and also with a design-partner programme for enterprises. Deployment includes a full agent-led migration of the existing contract estate, they added.
