Common Paper’s Gerri 2.0 Offers Accelerated Negotiations

Common Paper has launched Gerri 2.0, a new version of its contract analysis and negotiation system that comes with ‘a 10X faster processing engine, personality settings to guide the AI’s behaviour, and the ability to analyse negotiation history to suggest changes to your contract templates’. They are also now working directly with NewMod, AI-first law firm, General Legal, to handle contract work.

As noted above, part of this new phase includes ‘an optional attorney review add-on with flat-fee pricing and a 4-hour turnaround guarantee’, which will be provided by General Legal. It’s one of the first examples AL has seen of a legal AI vendor / NewMod alliance.

As to what Gerri does – which has its own branded website and pricing, which is separate from Common Paper’s standardised contracts offering – this is how it works:

  • ‘When a contract arrives, Gerri reads and evaluates every redline against the company’s negotiation playbook,
  • Then it autonomously accepts, counters, or escalates, routing each issue directly to the right person on the team, whether that’s the GC, the VP of Sales, or someone in Finance.
  • Team members can approve, push back, or suggest a counteroffer without opening Word.
  • Gerri applies every decision to the .docx directly and logs a full audit trail, citing the specific playbook rule behind each AI decision and recording every human override.
  • The result: 90% of contracts reviewed in 3 minutes or less.’

Stein, CEO and Co-founder of Common Paper, commented: ‘Most companies treat contract negotiation as a legal problem, but the people who feel the pain are spread across the entire company. Gerri 2.0 gives every team member the ability to weigh in on the areas they own, at the speed the business actually needs.’

In terms of working with General Legal, Stein added: ‘Contracts are a team sport. With Gerri, customers can decide which types of issues get handled by which members of the team, including the AI agent, attorney, and other functions like finance, security, and operations.

‘The attorney on the escalation path can be in-house, existing outside counsel, or if the customer doesn’t already have an attorney, with one click they can route it to our law firm partner, General Legal.’

Meanwhile, one customer, SurePath, said via its CEO Casey Bleeker: ‘Gerri paid for itself eight times over on my first contract and shortened our sales cycle by a full month. [We] reached agreed redlines with a customer in a single day, making it in time for an investment committee the following morning.’

Is this a big deal?

First, Common Paper started life as a standardised contract company – and still is, but Gerri takes it into the wider world of contract AI, which likely has an even larger total market.

AL especially liked the way that you can look at past contacts negotiations and then draw out key points to improve your templates – so that they evolve with you. And the ability to keep evolving is vital if this approach is to be effective.

The last part is the mention above of offering some form of added legal input, which Stein told this site is provided by NewMod law firm, General Legal.

It’s great to see this combination of a legal tech company with a NewMod – which makes a lot of sense. It makes AL wonder what other partnerships of this type could be formed in the same way? E.g. what if certain well-known legal AI platforms did deals with Crosby, or Soxton, or other NewMods as well? Hmmm…what could be possible?
